5 Minute Typing Test
Type the passage for five minutes and get your net WPM, accuracy and the keys you miss most. Start typing to begin — the clock starts on your first keystroke. Prefer a shorter run? Switch to 1 or 3 minutes above the text.
Scored by grapheme cluster, so a letter and its marks count as the one character you actually typed. Use your own English keyboard or our on-screen keyboard.
Why five minutes
Almost anyone can type fast for thirty seconds. Five minutes is long enough for the real pattern to show: the burst at the start fades, small errors start to appear around the third or fourth minute, and your net speed settles at the number you can actually sustain. That sustained number is the one employers and exam boards care about, which is why their tests run for five minutes or longer.
To compare your result with typical speeds by experience level, device and exam requirement, see average typing speed.

Frequently asked questions
Why take a 5 minute typing test instead of a 1 minute test?
A one-minute test mostly measures your best burst. Over five minutes your attention drifts and errors creep in, so the result is much closer to how fast you actually type at work or in an exam. Most job and exam typing tests run for 5 to 15 minutes for the same reason.
How is my WPM calculated?
Gross WPM is every character you typed divided by five, per minute. Net WPM subtracts one word per minute for each error. Accuracy is the share of characters you typed correctly. The test runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
What is a good score on a 5 minute typing test?
In a large 2018 study of about 168,000 volunteers, the average was about 52 WPM, and the fastest 10% averaged about 90 WPM. Around 40 WPM with high accuracy is comfortable for most office work. See the average typing speed page for the full breakdown.
Can I take the test in Hindi or another language?
Yes. Every language test on WorldTyping has a 5 minute option, using text written in that language. Pick your language from the list below this test.
