SSC CHSL typing test requirements
The CHSL typing test runs for 10 minutes. Hindi is 30 WPM, equivalent to 9,000 key depressions per hour. English is 35 WPM, equivalent to 10,500 KDPH.
Hindi may be typed as Mangal font with Unicode Inscript, or Kruti Dev 010 with the Remington layout. English uses Times New Roman 12.
Backspace, Delete, arrow keys, cut, copy, paste, undo and redo are all disabled.
Figures as stated in the SSC notification — confirm against the current year's notification before relying on them.
How SSC counts mistakes
This is the part most practice tools get wrong, and it changes how you should practise.
A full mistake costs you a whole word: a completely wrong word, an omitted word, or an extra word. A half mistake costs half a word: spacing, capitalisation, or punctuation errors.
Net Words = Gross Words Typed − Full Mistakes − (Half Mistakes × 0.5)
Permitted error tolerance, as a percentage of the passage's character count, is 20% for General/UR, 25% for OBC/EWS and 30% for SC/ST. Use the category selector above the test to score against the right one.
The practical consequence: omitting a word costs the same as typing one completely wrong. When you lose your place, do not skip ahead — that skipped word is a full mistake on top of whatever else goes wrong.
Mangal Inscript or Kruti Dev Remington — which to pick
If you are starting from zero, learn Mangal and Inscript. It is the Unicode standard, it is accepted by more exams, and the skill transfers to ordinary computer use outside the exam.
Choose Kruti Dev and Remington only if you already type Remington from a typing institute or a previous job. Do not switch layouts within six months of your exam.
Preparation plan
Weeks 1 to 3: layout only. No timer. Accuracy above 95%.
Weeks 4 to 6: 5-minute timed runs with backspace disabled.
Week 7 onward: full 10-minute runs at exam conditions. Track net WPM, not gross.
Throughout: if net speed is below the cutoff, the fix is almost always accuracy, not speed.
