Nepali Typing Test

Devanagari writes a syllable as a consonant plus the marks attached to it, and a computer counting Unicode code points sees more units than a reader does. मी is one character and two code points.

This test segments by grapheme cluster and normalises to NFC first, so a consonant with its matra counts once and a conjunct counts once. Without that, a speed score changes depending on which letters a passage happens to use — which makes comparing two runs meaningless.

It is worth noting for Nepali specifically. Our dictation depends on a browser speech service that is thinly supported for Nepali and absent in some browsers entirely.

The typing test has no such dependency: the corpora ship with the page and the scoring happens in your browser. It works the same on every device, with no account and nothing uploaded.

Gross WPM is characters divided by five, per minute. Net WPM subtracts errors per minute, clamped at zero. Accuracy is correct characters over everything typed, and the result breaks errors down per character so you can see which letters are costing you.

One, three or five minutes, finishing early allowed. On a phone the Nepali keyboard drills are the better use of the time — a touchscreen teaches the layout but will not build speed.
