What DEST is

The Data Entry Speed Test is the typing component of SSC CGL. It runs for 15 minutes and is measured as 2,000 key depressions, which works out at 35 WPM for English and 30 WPM for Hindi.

The disabled-key rules are the same as CHSL: backspace, delete, arrow keys, cut, copy, paste, undo and redo are all unavailable.

Why key depressions, not words

DEST counts key depressions rather than words because it is a data entry test, not a prose typing test. Every keystroke counts, including spaces and punctuation, which is why this page reports key depressions per hour alongside net WPM.

The practical effect is that passages dense with punctuation and numerals are not penalised the way a word-count measure would penalise them.

How this differs from CHSL

CHSL is 10 minutes; DEST is 15. The longer run makes stamina a real factor — accuracy at minute 14 is not the accuracy you had at minute 2, and the only way to find that out is to practise at full length.
