Greek Typing Test
Scored by grapheme cluster, so a letter and its marks count as the one character you actually typed. Use your own Greek keyboard or our on-screen keyboard.
WorldTyping’s free Greek typing test measures your speed and accuracy in Greek, scoring an accented vowel as one character and treating the final sigma as the distinct letter it is — no installation, no account, and nothing leaves your browser.
An accented vowel is one character
ώ can be stored as a single character or as a plain vowel followed by a combining accent, depending on the keyboard and the source of the text. To a reader it is obviously one letter.
Both the passage and your typing are normalised to NFC before they are compared, so it is scored as one character either way. You are measured on getting the letter right, not on how your keyboard happened to compose it.
The final sigma is a real error, not a nitpick
Greek writes ς at the end of a word and σ everywhere else — κόσμος has both. They are separate characters, and the rule has no exceptions.
So typing σ where ς belongs counts as an error here. It is among the most common mistakes people make typing Greek, and a test that forgave it would be measuring something easier than Greek.
Worth contrasting with dictation: on the Greek voice typing page the final sigma is applied for you as part of spelling the word. Typing is where you have to know it.
How the score is built
Gross WPM is characters divided by five, per minute. Net WPM subtracts errors per minute, clamped at zero. Accuracy is correct characters over everything typed, computed at the end from a log of what you produced.
One, three or five minutes; common words or paragraphs; finishing early allowed. The result breaks errors down per character — for Greek that usually means the accents and the two sigmas. On a phone the Greek keyboard drills teach the layout instead.
On a phone?
A touchscreen will not build typing speed, but it will teach you the layout. The Greek keyboard drills practise where each Greek letter sits, a few taps at a time.
Frequently asked questions
Does an accented vowel count as one character or two?
One. Both the passage and what you type are normalised to NFC before comparing, so ώ is a single character however your keyboard composed it. You are not penalised for the accent being a separate keystroke.
Is typing σ instead of ς at the end of a word an error?
Yes, and it should be. They are different characters, and Greek writes ς only at the end of a word. It is one of the most common mistakes when typing Greek, so the test counts it rather than quietly forgiving it.
Do I have to type the accents?
Yes. Every polysyllabic Greek word carries a tonos and the passages include them, so omitting one counts as an error. That is the standard the writing actually holds you to.
What do gross and net WPM mean?
Gross WPM is characters typed divided by five, per minute. Net WPM subtracts errors per minute and never goes below zero. Accuracy is correct characters over everything typed.
Are my results saved anywhere?
