English to Marathi Typing

Marathi has ळ and Hindi does not, and it appears in ordinary words — वेळ, फळ, कोल्हापूर.

Roman spelling has no way to distinguish it from a plain l, so the rules cannot infer it, and no spelling will produce it: type vel and you get वेल with an ordinary ल.

ळ is therefore a tap rather than a keystroke. It is in the consonant row of the Marathi keyboard, along with the chandra vowels ॲ and ऑ that Marathi uses for English loanwords. Type the word, then place the letter.

Devanagari writes many medial vowels that Roman spelling omits, so a tool that joined every consonant pair into a conjunct would be wrong more often than right — karna is करना, not a stacked cluster.

So conjuncts are formed only where casual spelling reliably implies one: doubled letters, y or r as the second member, and s, sh or n as the first. Anything outside that — lh, for instance — is written out plainly. It is a deliberate trade, and it is why kolhaapuur gives कोलहापूर rather than the fully conjoined spelling.

aa, ee and oo tell the tool you meant the long vowel. Common words are stored as exact spellings — namaskar gives नमस्कार — and everything else goes through the rules, where vowel length is the thing they cannot guess.
