Marathi Voice Typing
Autosaved in your browser — nothing is uploaded or stored on our servers. Voice recognition is handled by your browser and never stored by us.
WorldTyping’s free Marathi voice typing lets you speak Marathi and get Devanagari text in your browser using your device’s own speech recognition — no installation, no account, and no audio ever reaching our servers.
Sharing a script with Hindi is the real difficulty
Marathi and Hindi are both written in Devanagari, so the recogniser is not only converting sound to letters — it is deciding which language it is listening to. When it leans toward Hindi, what comes back is still well-formed Devanagari. It just is not Marathi.
The tell is grammar rather than spelling. Marathi आहे arriving as है, or Marathi verb endings flattened into Hindi ones, is the signature of that drift. Nothing looks misspelled, which is exactly why it is easy to send without noticing. Read the verb endings when you proofread; the nouns are usually fine.
ळ is the letter to check
Marathi has ळ, the retroflex lateral, and Hindi does not. It appears in ordinary words — कोल्हापूर, वेळ, फळ — so it turns up constantly in normal dictation.
If a ळ has come back as ल, that is the same Hindi drift showing up at the letter level. It is a quick thing to scan for and a reliable signal that the rest of the sentence deserves a closer look.
The chandra vowels and English words
Marathi writes English loanwords with ॲ and ऑ — बॅंक, ऑफिस. Dictation produces them inconsistently, and often sidesteps the question entirely by writing the loanword in Latin letters instead.
Either way it is a manual fix. For a message it rarely matters; for anything printed it does.
Where the audio goes
The microphone belongs to your browser. On Chrome and Edge the audio is sent to the browser vendor’s speech service and text comes back; WorldTyping is never in that path and never receives audio. The text stays in your browser, saved locally so a reload does not lose your draft.
Marathi is supported on Chrome and Edge but less thoroughly than Hindi, so expect a somewhat higher error rate — and an internet connection is required either way.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Marathi dictation sometimes come out looking like Hindi?
Because both languages use Devanagari, and the recogniser has to decide which one it is hearing. When it leans Hindi you get Hindi word forms and verb endings in correct-looking Devanagari — आहे becoming है, for instance. It is the hardest kind of error to spot because nothing looks broken. Read the verb endings rather than the letters.
Does it produce ळ correctly?
Usually, and it is worth checking because ळ is one of the letters Marathi has and Hindi does not. Words like कोल्हापूर and मराठी-specific vocabulary depend on it. If a ळ has come back as ल, the recogniser has drifted toward Hindi.
What about ॲ and ऑ?
Marathi uses the chandra vowels ॲ and ऑ for English loanwords — बॅंक, ऑफिस. Dictation produces them inconsistently, partly because the same loanwords are often transcribed in Latin script instead. Expect to fix these by hand.
Is my voice recorded or sent to WorldTyping?
No. Recognition is handled by your browser, and on Chrome and Edge the audio goes to the browser vendor’s speech service. WorldTyping never receives audio — only the text that comes back, which stays in your browser.
Which browsers support Marathi dictation?
Chrome and Edge on desktop and Android, with an internet connection. Marathi is supported but less thoroughly than Hindi, so expect a somewhat higher error rate. Safari on iOS and macOS varies by version.
Can I paste the Marathi text into WhatsApp or Word?
Yes. It is standard Unicode Devanagari, so it pastes into WhatsApp, Word, Google Docs, Gmail or a web form with no font to install.
