Nepali Voice Typing

Autosaved in your browser — nothing is uploaded or stored on our servers. Voice recognition is handled by your browser and never stored by us.

WorldTyping’s free Nepali voice typing lets you speak Nepali and get Devanagari text in your browser using your device’s own speech recognition — no installation, no account, and no audio ever reaching our servers.

Set your expectations first

Worth being straightforward about: Nepali is among the less well-supported languages for browser speech recognition. There is far less training data behind ne-NP than behind Hindi or Russian, and it shows — a higher error rate, and some browser and device combinations that will not offer Nepali dictation at all.

The practical advice is to test with one sentence before dictating anything long. If the microphone button does not respond, the browser is declining rather than the page failing, and the Nepali keyboard is the fallback that always works.

Register is the edit dictation cannot do for you

Nepali marks who you are speaking to in the verb. तिमी, तपाईं and हजुर each take different endings, and the difference between them is the difference between a text to a friend and a letter to an official.

Recognition transcribes what it hears. It has no idea who you are writing to, so if you dictate in the register you speak in, that is the register you get — every word spelled correctly and the tone entirely wrong for a formal document. It is the most common reason dictated Nepali needs rewriting rather than correcting.

Devanagari is shared, so Hindi bleeds in

Nepali and Hindi use the same script, and where Nepali support is weak the recogniser can drift toward the language it knows better. What comes back is valid Devanagari with Hindi grammar — छ arriving as है is the clearest example.

As with the register problem, nothing looks misspelled. Proofread the verb endings; the vocabulary is usually the part that survives intact.

Where the audio goes

The microphone is your browser’s. On Chrome and Edge the audio is sent to the browser vendor’s speech service and text comes back; WorldTyping is never in that path and never receives audio. The text stays in your browser, saved locally so a reload does not lose your draft.

Frequently asked questions

How well is Nepali supported compared with Hindi?

Less well. Nepali has far less speech-recognition training data behind it, so expect a noticeably higher error rate than Hindi or Russian, and expect some browsers not to offer it at all. If the microphone button does not respond, that is the browser declining rather than a fault on this page — the on-screen keyboard is the reliable fallback.

Does it get the honorific verb forms right?

Not dependably. Nepali distinguishes तिमी, तपाईं and हजुर registers with different verb endings, and the recogniser transcribes what it hears without knowing who you are writing to. If you dictate casually and are writing formally, the endings will be wrong even though every word is spelled correctly.

Why does my Nepali sometimes come back as Hindi?

Both use Devanagari, and where support for Nepali is weak a recogniser can fall back toward Hindi. The result is well-formed Devanagari with Hindi grammar — छ becoming है is the classic case. Check the verb endings, not the letters.

Is my voice recorded or sent to WorldTyping?

No. Recognition is handled by your browser, and on Chrome and Edge the audio goes to the browser vendor’s speech service. WorldTyping never receives audio — only the text that comes back, which stays in your browser.

Which browsers support Nepali dictation?

Chrome and Edge on desktop and Android are the best chance, with an internet connection. Support is thinner than for the larger languages and Safari coverage is unreliable. Test with one sentence before dictating anything long.

Can I paste the Nepali text into WhatsApp or Word?

Yes. It is standard Unicode Devanagari, so it pastes into WhatsApp, Word, Google Docs, Gmail or a web form with no font to install.
