Short vowels are not written

Persian is an abjad: the short vowels you say are generally not spelled out. Type ketab and you get کتب — shorter than you might expect, and correct.

Common words are stored as exact spellings and bypass the rules entirely, so salam gives سلام, mamnoon gives ممنون and chetori gives چطوری. A word that begins with a vowel gets an alef carrier automatically, which is why iran gives ایران.

You get the Persian ک and ی

Persian writes ک and ی where Arabic writes ك and ي. To the eye they are nearly the same; to a computer they are different characters, which is why Persian typed on an Arabic keyboard often cannot be found by a search.

This tool produces the Persian forms throughout — one of the quiet reasons to use it rather than an Arabic keyboard with Persian intentions.

The four letters Arabic does not have

پ, چ, ژ and گ are Persian’s own, and you reach them with p, ch, zh and g — so gol gives گل and pedar gives پدر.

Beyond the stored word list the engine works by rule, so names and technical vocabulary are approximations. The Persian keyboard has the full layout for anything you want to place exactly.

Common problems

Persian script usually drops short vowels, so the output can look different from what you typed — this is normal Persian spelling, not an error.
A word comes out with the wrong spelling — try a different phonetic spelling, or fix it directly with the on-screen keyboard for letters like پ, چ, ژ, and گ.
This is a basic phonetic helper, not a translator or spell-checker, so uncommon words are not guaranteed to be correct — review your text before using it.

Frequently asked questions

Why did the short vowels disappear?

Because Persian is an abjad — short vowels are generally not written. Type ketab and you get کتب, with the vowels unwritten, which is ordinary Persian spelling. Common words are stored as exact entries and come out fully spelled, so salam gives سلام and mamnoon gives ممنون.

Do I get the Persian ک and ی or the Arabic ك and ي?

The Persian ones. They look almost identical to their Arabic counterparts but are different Unicode characters, and Persian text written with the Arabic forms will not be found by a search. This tool produces the Persian forms throughout.

How do I type پ, چ, ژ and گ?

Does it work for Dari?

Mostly. The script is shared and most vocabulary is too, so ordinary words convert the same way. Afghanistan-specific vocabulary is not in the stored word list, so it goes through the rules like any other unrecognised word.

Can I paste the Persian text into WhatsApp or Word?

Yes. It is standard Unicode, so it pastes into WhatsApp, Word, Google Docs, Gmail or a web form. Right-to-left direction is carried by the characters and survives the paste.
