Short vowels are not written, and that is correct

Urdu is an abjad: the short vowels you pronounce are generally not written down. Type larkaa and you get لرکا — the short a in the middle has no letter of its own, exactly as in ordinary Urdu spelling.

Long vowels do get letters: i becomes ی and u becomes و, so paanii gives پانی. A word that begins with a vowel gets an alef carrier automatically. If the output looks shorter than you expected, this is why, and it is right.

Urdu has around a hundred exact spellings behind it — more than any other language on the site — covering greetings, function words and place names. Those come out perfectly: shukriya gives شکریہ, chai gives چائے with the final ے the rules alone would not produce.

Everything outside that list goes through the abjad rules literally. So the most ordinary spelling of a word is usually the best one to type.

The letters Urdu has that Arabic does not

ٹ ڈ ڑ and the ھ aspirates are what make Urdu spelling Urdu rather than Arabic. Aspirates come from digraphs — th, ph, bh, dh, jh.

The retroflexes are harder to reach from Roman spelling, since nothing in it distinguishes them. When a word needs one, the Urdu keyboard has all three on screen and is faster than guessing.

Why did the vowels disappear from the middle of my word?

Because Urdu is an abjad — short vowels are not normally written. Type larkaa and you get لرکا, with the short a unwritten. That is how Urdu is spelled, not a fault. Long vowels do appear: i becomes ی and u becomes و.

How do I type ٹ, ڈ and ڑ?

They come from the words the tool recognises, and the aspirates from digraphs — th, ph, bh, dh, jh. For a retroflex the rules will not give you, the Urdu keyboard has all three on screen; they are what separate Urdu spelling from Arabic and Persian.

Why is a common word perfect and a variant spelling not?

Urdu has the largest list of stored exact spellings of any language here — around a hundred common words, including greetings and place names. Those convert perfectly. A variant spelling falls through to the rules, which apply the abjad conventions literally.

Will it look like nastaliq?
