g is ґ — for ordinary г, type h
This is the one convention worth learning before anything else, because it catches people who have transliterated Russian before. Ukrainian has two letters where Russian has one: the soft г and the hard ґ.

The apostrophe is a letter’s worth of meaning
Ukrainian writes an apostrophe inside words — з’їсти, м’ясо, п’ять. It marks that the preceding consonant stays hard, and a word written without it is misspelled rather than merely informal.
Typing one is simply typing an apostrophe. This is where transliteration beats dictation for Ukrainian outright: on the voice typing page the apostrophe corresponds to a break rather than a sound, and gets dropped constantly.
The letters that prove it is Ukrainian
і, ї, є and ґ exist in Ukrainian and not in Russian. If a passage contains none of them, it is worth a second look — that is the signature of Russian forms creeping in, whether from a recogniser or from habit.
Beyond a list of common words the engine is rule-based, so it will not add a letter you did not type. The Ukrainian keyboard has the full layout when you want to place one exactly.

Common problems
- A word comes out with the wrong spelling — try typing it phonetically a different way, or edit the output directly.
- Ukrainian-specific letters like ї (yi), є (ye), and ґ (g) can be confused with their Russian look-alikes if you type ambiguous spellings.
- Less common words may fall back to basic letter rules instead of the dictionary, which is not always exact.

Frequently asked questions
Why does g give ґ instead of г?
Because Ukrainian has both letters and they are different sounds. g is mapped to the hard ґ, so gudzyk gives ґудзик. For the ordinary soft г, type h. This trips up anyone carrying a habit over from Russian transliteration, where there is only one letter.
How do I type the apostrophe in з’їсти?
Type a plain apostrophe and it is converted to the Ukrainian one. It is a real orthographic character, not decoration — a word missing it is misspelled — and it is the thing dictation drops most often, so typing has the advantage here.
How do I get і, ї and є?
i gives і, and the iotated ї and є come from yi and ye. These four letters plus ґ are what Ukrainian has and Russian does not, so they are the ones to check if text starts looking Russian.
Does it keep my capitals?
Yes. Capitalisation is mirrored from what you typed, including all-caps, which is useful for names and headings.
