Ukrainian Voice Typing
Autosaved in your browser — nothing is uploaded or stored on our servers. Voice recognition is handled by your browser and never stored by us.
WorldTyping’s free Ukrainian voice typing lets you speak Ukrainian and get Cyrillic text in your browser using your device’s own speech recognition — no installation, no account, and no audio ever reaching our servers.
The apostrophe is the thing to check first
Ukrainian uses an apostrophe inside words — з’їсти, м’ясо, п’ять. It is not decoration and not optional: it marks that the consonant before it stays hard and the vowel after it is iotated. A word written without it is misspelled.
Dictation drops it frequently, because it corresponds to a break rather than to a sound of its own. Since the omission is systematic, scanning for words that should carry one is quick and catches most of what you need to fix.
ґ will usually arrive as г
Ukrainian has two letters where Russian has one: г, a soft voiced fricative, and ґ, a hard g. ґ is genuinely rare — ґанок, ґудзик, ґрунт — and close enough in speech that recognition almost always writes г.
For most writing this passes unnoticed. Where the word matters, it is a one-character correction, and ґ is on the Ukrainian keyboard if you would rather type it.
Russian bleeds in where the recogniser is unsure
Ukrainian and Russian share most of the Cyrillic alphabet, and a recogniser that is uncertain can fall toward the language it has more data for. What comes back then is valid Cyrillic with Russian spellings or vocabulary — the same failure mode Marathi has with Hindi.
The reliable tell is the letters Ukrainian has and Russian does not: і, ї, є and ґ. If a passage of dictated Ukrainian contains none of them, or contains и where і belongs, that is where it drifted.
Where the audio goes
The microphone is your browser’s. On Chrome and Edge the audio is sent to the browser vendor’s speech service and text comes back; WorldTyping is never in that path and never receives audio. The text stays in your browser, saved locally so a reload does not lose your draft.
That is also why dictation needs an internet connection, and why a browser without Ukrainian speech support will not respond to the button.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the apostrophe missing from words like з’їсти?
Because it marks a break in pronunciation rather than a sound of its own, and recognisers drop it often. The Ukrainian apostrophe is a real orthographic character — з’їсти, м’ясо, п’ять — and a word without it is misspelled, not merely informal. It is the first thing to proofread in dictated Ukrainian.
Do I get ґ or г?
Usually г, because ґ is rare and the two are close in speech. Ukrainian uses ґ in a small set of words such as ґанок and ґудзик, and dictation tends to write г for both. Worth knowing so you can correct it where it matters.
Why does some of my Ukrainian come back looking Russian?
Ukrainian and Russian share most of the Cyrillic alphabet, and where a recogniser is uncertain it can fall toward Russian forms. Watch for и where і belongs, and for Russian vocabulary substituted for Ukrainian. Check the letters і, ї, є and ґ specifically — they exist in Ukrainian and not in Russian, so their absence is the signal.
Is my voice recorded or sent to WorldTyping?
No. Recognition is handled by your browser, and on Chrome and Edge the audio goes to the browser vendor’s speech service. WorldTyping never receives audio — only the text that comes back, which stays in your browser.
Which browsers support Ukrainian dictation?
Chrome and Edge on desktop and Android, with an internet connection. Safari on iOS and macOS varies by version. If the microphone button does nothing, the browser is declining rather than the page failing.
Can I paste the Ukrainian text into Word or Telegram?
Yes. It is standard Unicode Cyrillic, so it pastes into Word, Google Docs, Gmail, Telegram, WhatsApp or a web form with no font to install.
