x is χ, and ξ is typed ks

This follows Greeklish, the informal convention Greeks have used online for decades: x is typed for χ because the two look alike. It is not the classical transliteration, and it is what people actually type.

Words where x genuinely is ξ — exi gives έξι — are stored as exceptions, so the convention does not damage them.

Accents come from the word list, not the rules

This is the one thing to know before using Greek output anywhere formal. kalimera gives καλημέρα, accented, because it is a known word. psari gives ψαρι — correct letters, no tonos — because the rules converted it and the rules do not know where the stress falls.

Every polysyllabic Greek word needs its accent, so anything beyond the common vocabulary will want a pass to add them. The Greek keyboard has accented vowels directly, and Greek voice typing gets accents right on its own — an unusual case where dictating beats typing.

The final sigma is automatic

Greek writes ς at the end of a word and σ everywhere else. The tool applies the rule after converting, so kosmos gives κόσμος with both forms placed correctly — one less thing to remember, and one of the most common mistakes when typing Greek by hand.

Common problems

A word comes out with the wrong spelling — try typing it phonetically a different way, or edit the output directly.
Digraphs like th (θ), ps (ψ), and ch (χ) need to be typed together — splitting them can produce the wrong letter.
Less common words may not be in the dictionary and fall back to basic letter rules, which is not always accurate.

Frequently asked questions

Why does x give χ instead of ξ?

Because that is the Greeklish convention — x looks like χ, so people type it that way. For ξ, type ks: ksero gives ξερο. Common x-as-ξ words like exi are stored as exceptions and come out as έξι regardless.

Why do some words get accents and others do not?

Accents come from the stored list of common words, not from the rules. kalimera gives καλημέρα with its accent because it is a known word; a word converted by rule, like psari, comes out as ψαρι without one. The letters are right either way — you are adding the tonos yourself.

Does it handle the final sigma?
