Russian Voice Typing

Russian is one of the languages where dictated punctuation tends to work. Saying запятая, точка, вопросительный знак or новая строка is commonly transcribed as the mark rather than as the word — which makes long dictation genuinely practical here in a way it is not for, say, Hindi or Bengali.

It is not a guarantee. The behaviour comes from your browser’s speech service, not from this page, so it can differ between Chrome and Edge and between versions. Dictate one sentence with a spoken запятая and see which you get before committing to a long passage.

Expect все rather than всё, and елка rather than ёлка. This is not an error: outside dictionaries, children’s books and genuinely ambiguous cases, standard written Russian uses е for both, and the recogniser follows the convention.

Where the distinction matters, add it afterwards. On the Russian keyboard ё sits on the backtick key, left of the number row, exactly as it does on a physical ЙЦУКЕН layout.

Russian personal and place names generally transcribe well. Foreign words are the unpredictable part: an established loanword usually arrives in Cyrillic, while a brand name or a recent borrowing can come back in Latin letters mid-sentence. Neither is wrong exactly, but you want consistency in a document, so it is worth a glance before sending.

The microphone is the browser’s. On Chrome and Edge the audio is sent to the browser vendor’s speech service and the text is sent back; WorldTyping is never in that path and never receives audio. The text stays in your browser, saved locally so a reload does not lose your draft.

That is also why dictation needs an internet connection, and why a browser without Russian speech support simply will not respond to the button.
