The h you might drop is a different word

Punjabi carries lexical tone, which is unusual among Indo-Aryan languages, and there are no tone marks. The tone rides on the letters ਘ ਝ ਢ ਧ ਭ, which you reach by adding an h when you type.

So gh and g are not two spellings of one sound; they select different letters and different words. It is the easiest thing to be sloppy about and the most consequential.

Nasal marks are a tap, not a keystroke

changa gives ਚੰਗਾ — correctly, tippi and all — because it is on the stored word list. A variant like changaa falls through to the rules and gives ਚਨ੍ਗਾ, with the nasal spelled out as a full consonant.

The rules never produce ਂ or ੰ. Two consequences worth acting on: type the plainest spelling of a word, since that is the one most likely to be recognised; and for nasalisation the rules miss, place the mark from the Punjabi keyboard.

Frequently asked questions

Do I get Gurmukhi or Shahmukhi?

Gurmukhi, the script used in Indian Punjab. Punjabi in Pakistan is written in Shahmukhi, a Perso-Arabic script, and nothing on this page produces it.

Why does changa work but changaa not?

changa is a stored word and gives ਚੰਗਾ with the tippi in the right place. changaa falls through to the rules, which write the nasal as a full consonant — ਚਨ੍ਗਾ. The rules never produce bindi or tippi, so the plainest spelling of a word is the one to reach for.

How do I add nasalisation the rules missed?

Tap it on the Punjabi keyboard — ਂ, ੰ and the addak ੱ are in the vowel-signs row. Draft here, then place them.

Why does the h matter in gh and bh?

Because Punjabi is tonal and the tone rides on ਘ, ਝ, ਢ, ਧ and ਭ rather than on any mark. Dropping the h does not shorten a spelling — it selects a different letter and a different word.
