The chillu forms come out right on their own

Malayalam closes a great many words with a chillu — ൻ ർ ൽ ൾ ൺ — and they are separate characters, not a styled version of the plain consonant. Choosing wrongly gives you a bare consonant plus a virama, which looks nearly the same and is not the same text.

Typing here converts them as part of rendering the word. avan gives അവൻ; aval gives അവൽ. You do not have to know a chillu was involved.

This is the language where typing wins

Most pages here suggest drafting by typing and finishing on the keyboard. For Malayalam the balance tips further toward typing than anywhere else, for two reasons: the chillu forms are handled automatically, and Malayalam genuinely uses long agglutinated words that are slow to assemble by tapping.

When output looks alarmingly long, it is frequently correct. Where the tool errs is the boundary — fusing two words that should stay apart, or splitting a legitimate compound — which makes the common fix a spacing edit rather than a spelling one. The Malayalam keyboard is there for single-character corrections.

Frequently asked questions

Does it write the chillu letters correctly?

Yes, automatically. Type avan and you get അവൻ with the chillu ൻ, not a bare ന with a virama; aval gives അവൽ. Getting those right is the usual difficulty with Malayalam input, and typing handles it.

Why are my words so long?

Because Malayalam writes them that way. It is strongly agglutinative and sandhi joins words in writing, so a phrase you would say as several words is often correctly one long written word. Long output is usually right.

Should I use the keyboard instead?

For Malayalam, mostly no. Typing produces the chillu forms and the long joined words correctly, whereas assembling those by tapping is slow. The keyboard is best kept for correcting a single character.

Can I dictate?

In Chrome and Edge, yes — a microphone appears in the input area. It is worth knowing that the button only renders where the browser supports speech recognition, so on a browser without it you will simply not see one. Malayalam dictation works reasonably; the errors tend to be word boundaries rather than spelling, so check where the joins fall.
