The chillu forms — and why you may not need to tap them
ൻ ർ ൽ ൾ ൺ close a great many Malayalam words, and they are separate characters rather than a styled version of the plain consonant. They are in the consonant row here.
But this is the one language on the site where typing may serve you better than tapping. Phonetic typing converts them for you: avan gives അവൻ, aval gives അവൽ. The keys are there for when you want to place a specific character, not because you have to.
When tapping is the right choice
Malayalam is strongly agglutinative and joins words through sandhi, so correct Malayalam contains genuinely long words. Assembling one of those by tapping is slow work; typing it phonetically is not.
Tapping earns its place for corrections — fixing a single letter in a word that came out nearly right — and for characters you want to be certain about. Both modes write into the same box, so switching costs nothing.
Vowels and vowel signs
The vowels row is for the start of a word or syllable; the vowel-signs row attaches to a consonant already placed — ക then ാ gives കാ. Tapping an independent vowel after a consonant gives two letters rather than one syllable, which is the usual first mistake.

Frequently asked questions
Where are the chillu letters?
ൻ, ർ, ൽ, ൾ and ൺ are in the consonant row. You may not need them: phonetic typing already produces them at the end of a word — type avan and you get അവൻ with the chillu, not a bare ന with a virama. They are here for when you want to place one exactly.
Should I tap or type?
For Malayalam, typing is usually the better route. The chillu forms and the long agglutinated words that Malayalam actually uses come out correctly from phonetic input, whereas assembling them by tapping is slow. The keys are best used for corrections and for individual characters.

Which orthography is this?
