Tapping assembles clusters; typing stacks them for you
Kannada writes consonant clusters by hanging the second consonant beneath the first — the ottakshara. The two input methods on this page reach it differently, and it is worth knowing which you are using.
Phonetic typing stacks them automatically: write kannada and you get ಕನ್ನಡ with the doubled n already subscripted. Tapping does not — you build the cluster yourself: first consonant, then the virama ್, then the second.
Slower, and worth it when you want a specific cluster rather than the one a rule inferred.
ಳ is here and nowhere else
ಳ is an everyday Kannada letter, and phonetic typing cannot produce it — haLLi gives ಹಲ್ಲಿ with an ordinary ಲ, because Roman spelling has no way to distinguish the two.

Vowels, signs, and the long ones
The vowels row is for the start of a word or syllable; the vowel-signs row attaches to a consonant already placed — ಕ then ಾ gives ಕಾ. Tapping an independent vowel after a consonant yields two letters instead of one syllable.
ಏ and ಓ are distinct from their short counterparts and change what a word means, so they are worth locating once. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
How do I make an ottakshara by tapping?
Tap the first consonant, then the virama ್ in the vowel-signs row, then the second consonant. Unlike phonetic typing, which stacks clusters for you automatically, tapping assembles them step by step — slower, but you get exactly the cluster you meant.
Where is ಳ?
In the consonant row. It is worth knowing that phonetic typing will not produce it — type haLLi and you get ಹಲ್ಲಿ with an ordinary ಲ — so ಳ is tap-only.
When do I use ಅ and when ಾ?

How do I get the long ಏ and ಓ?
They are in the vowels row, with their signs in the vowel-signs row. If you are typing phonetically instead, double the vowel — ee and oo — since Kannada distinguishes short and long e and o and the difference changes the word.
