How to type in Tamil

  1. Type Tamil words phonetically in the left box using English letters — for example vanakkam.
  2. The Tamil script text appears instantly in the right box: வணக்கம்.
  3. Copy it, share it, download it, or print it.

Examples

You typeYou get
vanakkamவணக்கம்
naanநான்
ammaஅம்மா
nandriநன்றி

Tamil is one of the world's oldest living languages, official in Tamil Nadu, Sri Lanka, and Singapore. Its script has no aspirated consonants, so phonetic typing maps several English sounds to one Tamil letter — for loanwords, Grantha letters like ஜ and ஷ are used.

Common problems

  • A word comes out with the wrong spelling — try typing it phonetically a different way, or edit the output directly.
  • k, g, and kh all map to the same Tamil letter (க) — this is normal Tamil orthography, not a tool limitation.
  • Loanwords needing Grantha letters (ஜ, ஷ, ஸ) may need the on-screen keyboard for exact characters.

Copy & paste

Output is standard Unicode Tamil — copy it straight into WhatsApp, Word, or Google Docs and it displays correctly everywhere.

On mobile

Works in any mobile browser without installing anything; useful for quick phonetic typing when you don't have a Tamil keyboard set up.

Frequently asked questions

How does English to Tamil typing work?

Type Tamil words the way they sound, using English (Roman) letters, and the tool converts them into Tamil script as you type. You can then copy, download, print, or share the text.

Is this a translator?

No — this is transliteration, not translation. It converts the sounds you type into Tamil script script. To get Tamil words, type Tamil phonetically; English sentences are not translated.

Is it free? Do I need to sign up?

Completely free, no account needed. Your text is processed in your browser and autosaved locally — nothing is uploaded to our servers.

Can I use the Tamil text in WhatsApp, Gmail, or Word?

Yes. The output is standard Unicode Tamil, which works everywhere — WhatsApp, social media, Gmail, MS Word, Google Docs, and official documents.
