This is a kana palette, not an IME
Worth being clear about first, because it is different from the other keyboards on this site. There is no phonetic mode here: you tap the kana you want and it appears. Nothing converts romaji as you type.
If typing romaji is what you wanted, Japanese typing is the page for it — write konnichiwa and get こんにちは. This page is for when you want a specific character, or when you are learning where the kana are.
Four sections, in the order you need them
Hiragana is the full gojūon, laid out in the familiar rows — あいうえお, かきくけこ, and so on to ん.
Dakuten / handakuten holds the voiced and semi-voiced kana — が ざ だ ば ぱ and their rows. These are precomposed single characters rather than a base kana followed by a separate mark, which is why they survive copying into any application without the mark drifting.
Small kana & marks covers ゃ ゅ ょ for combined sounds like きょ, the small っ for doubled consonants as in きっぷ, the long-vowel mark ー, and 、 and 。.
Katakana is the full set again, for loanwords and names.
Kana only
There is no kanji here, and no conversion step. For kanji you want Japanese typing or Japanese voice typing, which picks kanji from context.
Kana-only is genuinely what you want for furigana, for a learner’s exercise, for a name in katakana, or for the moment you need one character and do not want to fight an input method for it. Everything runs in your browser and your draft is kept locally.
Frequently asked questions
Can I type romaji here and get kana?
Not on this page. This keyboard is a kana palette — you tap the character you want. If you would rather type romaji and have it converted, use Japanese typing instead, which is built for exactly that.
How do I get が, ぱ and the other voiced kana?
They have their own keys in the Dakuten / handakuten section. They are single precomposed characters rather than a base kana plus a separate mark, which means they copy and paste cleanly everywhere.
Where are the small kana?
In the Small kana & marks section — ゃ, ゅ, ょ for combined sounds like きょ, and っ for the doubled consonant in words like きっぷ. The long vowel mark ー and Japanese punctuation 、and 。 are there too.
Does it produce kanji?
No. This is kana only. For kanji you would want Japanese typing, which converts as you go, or dictation, which selects kanji from context.
Can I paste the Japanese text into Word or LINE?
Yes. It is standard Unicode, so it pastes into Word, Google Docs, Gmail, LINE, WhatsApp or a web form with no font to install.
