Bengali Voice Typing

Worth knowing up front: recognition is requested as bn-IN, the Indian variety — while most Bengali speakers are in Bangladesh. The script is identical and the great majority of vocabulary is shared, so Bangladeshi speech transcribes accurately most of the time.

Where it slips is vocabulary rather than spelling: a word that differs between Dhaka and Kolkata usage will sometimes come back as the Kolkata form. That makes proofreading a different job than it is in, say, Hindi — you are checking word choice, not letters.

Bengali dictation errs in predictable places. The aspirated and unaspirated pairs — ব and ভ, ক and খ — differ by a breath that fast speech swallows. The three sibilants শ ষ স are a harder case still, because many speakers pronounce all three the same way, so the recogniser is guessing from context rather than from sound.

Checking those specifically is more efficient than rereading the whole text, because that is where the errors sit.

Pausing does not produce a ।. Dictate for a minute and you get one long unpunctuated line. A sentence at a time, adding the daṛi and commas as you go, is faster than repairing it afterwards.

The microphone belongs to your browser. On Chrome and Edge the audio is sent to the browser vendor’s speech service and text comes back; WorldTyping is never in that path and never receives audio. The text stays in your browser, saved locally so a reload does not lose your draft.

Which is also why dictation needs an internet connection, and why a browser without Bengali speech support will not respond to the button.
